Project: Urban Courtyard
Where: Tallahassee,FL
When: Spring 2013
Known as one of the most beautiful cities in the South, historic Tallahassee is the state capital of Florida. Noted for its rolling hills, beautiful old structures and scenic tree-lined streets, the city also holds a unique Civil War distinction. Magnolia Drive is a very popular street in Tallahassee and plays a major role in vehicular circulation. On this street resides a neglected courtyard plaza nicknamed “little Italy”. My challenge was to redesign the interior of this courtyard to while maintaining integrity of the existing fabric. After analyzing the site, I noticed that there was a vast amount of sunlight heating the space and making it unbearable during hot summer days. In response, a water feature was implemented in the design as a means to cool the area for much comfort to future inhabitants.
